Trustworthy medical information from HON

Did you know that a website can be officially authorized as credible? Read on before dismissing this assertion as a fake news story. Health on the Net Foundation (www.hon.ch) certifies websites that provide health and medical information. Websites affix the HONcode to a webpage to let you know it is “approved.” For example, go to the Mayo Clinic’s Diseases and Conditions page, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the HONcode. And Dr. Oz’s website? No code for him; however, give him credit for honesty since his site is clearly labeled: “This website is for informational and entertainment purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.” So for credible medical and health information on the web be sure to look for the code. You can also use the foundation’s specialized medical search engine (HONsearch) to discover reliable medical information.

24/7 Chat?

Yes, it’s true! You can chat with a professional librarian 24/7 to obtain research assistance and get answers to all things “Library” (see below for what that means). Text us 24/7, too: 615-956-2275 aka 2ASK. Go old school and call us whenever the library is open: 615-230-3400; drop us an email at any time, too.

Ask a librarian service provides 24/7 chat and text

Timely to note that a library is not a bookstore. Please direct your textbook purchase/rental inquiries to the VSCC Bookstore directly.

In fact, your Thigpen Library is proud that we’re not a bookstore. Why? We don’t sell anything: we lend everything for free, including books as well as calculators, noise-canceling headphones, laptops, Audio-Visual equipment, and more. More importantly, we spend lots of money on databases to provide 24/7 online access to millions of articles & hundreds of thousands of ebooks in full text to VSCC employees and students. So, we’re proud to be able to remove $ as a barrier to information access through library resources and services.

Chat and text services provide you with the assistance you need to:

  • choose and search databases effectively for information
  • identify physical items that you can borrow and use (including some textbooks that your professors put on “course reserve” for short-term access)
  • learn about library services, such as interlibrary loan
  • learn about library spaces available for group or individual study.

Fun fact: 3:00AM is the only hour without a chat or text inquiry since the service started in July 2017!

Practice that Presentation

Borrow Materials from Other Libraries through Interlibrary Loan

The end is near!  (The end of the semester, that is.) Maybe you’re procrastinating on doing research for your final paper.  If so, now is the time to start looking for sources.  Thigpen Library has vast amounts of books and articles.  However, there may be that one item you need that could be the difference between an A+ and an A-.  We can request books or articles from another library but it may take a week or two, especially for books.  Thus, time is of the essence.  For more information, or to request a book or article, see the Interlibrary Loan page on the library’s website.

DID YOU KNOW? The cost of keeping rabbits as pets is almost as expensive as a cat or dog!  With their lifespan of 14 years on average, that rabbit will cost you more than $11,000. Stuffed bunny rabbits, however, are cheap and provide joy for a lifetime.
