ProQuest Research Library – you can’t get there from Google

Google is search engine. A search engine finds stuff on the Web. Duh, you say. Consider this — you can find my Facebook account through Google but you can’t see much about my account unless you have a Facebook account and I have authorized you to see my stuff.

This same concept applies to Thigpen Library databases. Google will find the company ProQuest and information on the database Research Library, but it will not find Thigpen Library’s subscription which allows people currently affiliated with Vol State to use the database. The only way to access our ProQuest Research Library subscription account is to use an “official” Thigpen Library link. An “official” link does two things. One action of the link is to send you to our subscription / account. The other action is to verify that you are an authorized user. If you are not using Vol State computer network you will be routed through a “proxy server” for authorization as a user.

Save time and avoid frustration – use the Force of Thigpen Library links.

Trustworthy medical information from HON

Did you know that a website can be officially authorized as credible? Read on before dismissing this assertion as a fake news story. Health on the Net Foundation (www.hon.ch) certifies websites that provide health and medical information. Websites affix the HONcode to a webpage to let you know it is “approved.” For example, go to the Mayo Clinic’s Diseases and Conditions page, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the HONcode. And Dr. Oz’s website? No code for him; however, give him credit for honesty since his site is clearly labeled: “This website is for informational and entertainment purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.” So for credible medical and health information on the web be sure to look for the code. You can also use the foundation’s specialized medical search engine (HONsearch) to discover reliable medical information.

24/7 Chat?

Yes, it’s true! You can chat with a professional librarian 24/7 to obtain research assistance and get answers to all things “Library” (see below for what that means). Text us 24/7, too: 615-956-2275 aka 2ASK. Go old school and call us whenever the library is open: 615-230-3400; drop us an email at any time, too.

Ask a librarian service provides 24/7 chat and text

Timely to note that a library is not a bookstore. Please direct your textbook purchase/rental inquiries to the VSCC Bookstore directly.

In fact, your Thigpen Library is proud that we’re not a bookstore. Why? We don’t sell anything: we lend everything for free, including books as well as calculators, noise-canceling headphones, laptops, Audio-Visual equipment, and more. More importantly, we spend lots of money on databases to provide 24/7 online access to millions of articles & hundreds of thousands of ebooks in full text to VSCC employees and students. So, we’re proud to be able to remove $ as a barrier to information access through library resources and services.

Chat and text services provide you with the assistance you need to:

  • choose and search databases effectively for information
  • identify physical items that you can borrow and use (including some textbooks that your professors put on “course reserve” for short-term access)
  • learn about library services, such as interlibrary loan
  • learn about library spaces available for group or individual study.

Fun fact: 3:00AM is the only hour without a chat or text inquiry since the service started in July 2017!
