April Brings Library Joy!

April is one of the most joyful months for Thigpen Library. Why? I’m glad you asked.

National Poetry Month in French and EnglishApril is National Poetry Month.

April is Autism Awareness Month.

April includes National Library Week (April 9-15, 2017).

Thigpen Library in Gallatin is honoring these important occasions throughout the month of April with several lovely displays (upstairs, downstairs, and lobby).

Another reason to visit Thigpen Library in April? Relieve some stress!

Our “Secret Cinema” and “LOL” film displays will provide you with some great movie-viewing options. Express yourself by writing your own poem or creating  your own Haiku on our whiteboard display.

Game Day (ping pong! cards! board games!) will be held on April 12 (10a – 2p, Rochelle Center) bring a friend, play a game, and grab a treat.

But – wait! There’s more: wonderful surprises and support in store for students throughout the month of April. Stop by your Vol State in Gallatin library to explore and enjoy. Happy April, everyone!

Remember: Flipster is mobile!

*A note about the mobile application in iTunes per iPad testing: when you open a title in Flipster, you’ll see a “cookies must be enabled” message and then an excessive amount of white space. Scroll, scroll, scroll down the white space until you see the menu menu icon icon. From the menu, you can open up the magazine in the Flipster app.

Please help us determine if Flipster is beneficial to our patrons so that we can make good purchasing decisions. Try it out!

Please send feedback about Flipster to Sarah Smith, Director of Library Services, or via this form.

Look Out You Rock ‘n’ Rollers

“Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes!”
“Turn and face the strange changes…”
—David Bowie*

It’s not just a classic pop song by David Bowie:
It’s what VolState Library is bringing to YOU via our LIBRARY WEBSITE (as well as our new Library-branded logo). [See below & thanks, VolState Public-Relations team!]

On Tuesday July 12, the Library will launch a new interface to our website named “PIONEER SEARCH” to honor Vol State’s very own Pioneers.  This new online presence is a front-end product called “Primo” by library vendor, Ex Libris, which is necessary in order to connect with the library’s entirely new back-end catalog called “Alma”.

Please BE PATIENT during this transitional period!
And please ASK US if you’re struggling to find what you need – we’re here to help!

LIBRARY  WEBSITE  CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

TUESDAY JUNE 28 – FRIDAY JULY 15

FINDING Books & E-Books: continue to use the one-stop search box in the center of the library’s home page; starting on July 8 and through July 13, search eBooks only; the library’s old catalog works but does not reflect current data.

FINDING Newspapers, Videos, Lynda.com and NoodleBib:  as usual, use the direct links to these resources from the library’s home page.

FINDING Articles:

ASK A LIBRARIAN!

USE THE LIBRARY’S GUIDES

  • Research guides will help you identify disciplinary-specific databases and other resources that are related to your topics. For example, if you want to research the psychological effects of social media use, you would use the library’s “Psychology” guide.

PROQUEST RESEARCH LIBRARY

  • This database provides access to articles on every topic – highly recommended!

SEARCH FOR A SPECIFIC DATABASE

Go to the green box named “Databases” on the library’s home page to locate an A to Z list of all the library’s subscription databases.

TUESDAY JULY 12 WEDNESDAY, JULY 13

Stay tuned as we roll out new instructions for navigating PIONEER SEARCH on Wednesday, July 13!
