Why does Vol State have The Feed? Because food insecurity is fast becoming a serious obstacle to students success at college and university campuses across the country. Lack of adequate nutrition affects a student’s ability to succeed and persist in college. The Feed is a start towards addressing the needs of our students. The Feed is a food pantry which provides canned food items, ready to heat/eat meals, ingredients to make snacks and even personal hygiene items. However, as the needs grow on our campus, so must The Feed. One of the challenges for The Feed is maintaining an adequate food supply as The Feed is set up to benefit any current student enrolled at VSCC. Another challenge for The Feed is identifying faculty, staff and student volunteers across the campus willing to work at The Feed.
In summary, The mission of The Feed at Vol State is to alleviate the barriers and challenges associated with food insecurity and hunger so that students can persist in school, and ultimately, earn their degrees. If you are interested in assisting with the mission of The Feed, there are numerous ways to get involved. We are in need of staffing assistance during the hours of operation (will be determined by the availability of volunteers); sorting donated items, tracking inventory, and collecting donated items from across the campus. There are typically two training sessions held each semester for interested potential volunteers for The Feed. Even if you have attended training in the past, any interested persons will need to participate as we have changed a few procedures. Please visit this site often for updates on The Feed, hours of operation, training sessions and other information from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
