Despite the August heat, the winds of change are upon us. The 2018-2019 academic year is right around the corner. So the question is, are you ready for it? In Distributed Education, we are. We are geared up and ready to help faculty and students have a successful start to the fall semester. Below are five useful resources to help you prepare.
#1 Student Learn to Use eLearn Workshops
New students are encouraged to attend one of the many “Learn to Use eLearn” workshops available this fall. Workshops last about 1 hour each. There are online sessions available as well as many campus-based workshops in Gallatin, Livingston, or Cookeville.

#2 Faculty Training & Professional Development Options
We have a full slate of training and development options available for faculty to choose from this fall. For example, learn how to make YouTube videos accessible; improve student engagement in online discussion boards; find open, free instructional materials; or use eLearn’s grade book. These options and more are on the fall schedule!
Can’t make it to campus for a weekday workshop? We’ve got you covered. Several online options are also available on the same topics.

#3 Best Practices Checklist

#4 New Knowledge Base Articles
Along with the IT department’s new Knowledge Base, we have built how-to support articles for faculty and students on the following topics:
And we’re adding more information every week. This new online resource gives you 24 x 7 access to answers to the most frequently asked questions about eLearn and related technology questions.
#5 eLearn Updates
In May, eLearn got a facelift we called Daylight. If you had summer classes, you have already been working in the new interface. But for many other returning students and faculty, the first few days of using eLearn may take some getting used to.
Here are a few key changes that you’ll see:
- The “waffle” icon is used to search for courses.
- The News area has been renamed Announcements.
- Under My Courses, each course has a picture tile. Faculty members have the option to replace the default image.
- Faculty now see a “Course Overview” which provides an easy way to measure student engagement and activity. Students will not be able to see this tool.
- There’s a new quiz setup interface for faculty.
- Student access to rubrics has been improved in discussions, dropbox, and the grades area.
- Faculty can “Manage Dates” all on one screen and can also use a bulk offset function to update all of the due dates for their course.
